AMAA 2012 ‘Africa Rising’ Raise the Bar Yet Again + Full Winners List

The just
concluded 2012 edition of the African Movie Academy Awards was nothing short of
an assemblage of the crème de la crème of the film industry in Africa had to
offer and the glam associated with the annual event was further accentuated by
the presence of seasoned movie veterans from Hollywood.
Dubbed ‘Africa Rising’, the 2012 AMAAs had a
whopping 328 entries from film makers across different African countries with
South Africa’s ‘Otelo Burning’ getting the highest nomination with 13 nods.
Among the bevy of African thespians in the
diaspora that graced the red carpet of AMAA 2012 was Emmy award winner and
Golden Globe nominee Lynn Whitfield (The Josephine Baker Story and Without a
Trace), Morris Chestnut(American Horror Story, Boys in the Hood), Rockmond
Dunbar( Prison Break, Sons of Anarchy), Maya Gilbert (General Hospital, Days of
Our Lives) and Heroes star Jimmy Jean-Louis who co-hosted the prestigious
awards.
Lancelot Imasuen’s ‘Adesuwa’, ‘Othelo Burning’
and ‘How to Steal 2 million’ were the highest winning films on the night with
three awards each in various categories.
After four years of consecutive
nominations, Ghanaian star Majid Michael
finally picked his first AMAA as he emerged ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ for
his performance in ‘Somewhere in Africa’ while sultry Nigerian screen goddess,
Rita Dominic picked the same award in the female category for her role in
‘Shattered’.
Performances from Yinka Davies, Senegal’s Vivian Ndour, Asa and 2Face
Idibia swathed the Expo Centre of Eko Hotel and Suites with excitement and was
the perfect icing on the cake for a night revered as the largest and most prestigious awards ceremony
for the African film industry.
