Eye on Ondo: “My party is 70 per cent on ground in the state” – Gov. Mimiko
by Isi Esene
The Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has expressed his confidence in emerging victorious in the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in the state.
The governor reportedly made this known yesterday at an interactive session with media men at his official lodge at the Government House in Akure.
The elections promises to be a keenly contested one with opposition parties like the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) represented
by Rotimi Akeredolu, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), represented by Olusola Oke, doing everything politically to wrest power from Mimiko who flies the Labour Party flag.
Mimiko, who is seeking a second term, said, “I tell you that we are very confident; we think that we are vigilant; we are looking at all the possibilities, all the shenanigans that come from whatever source.
“Today, (among) the ACN, PDP, and Labour Party, by any measure, we (Labour Party) are not less than 70 per cent on ground. And yet, the opponents are still boasting that they will capture this state. Unless something near cataclysm happens, there is no other way other than illegitimate means for them to capture it,” he boasted.
Despite his confidence of victory in the upcoming elections, Mimiko stated that his party remains vigilant of the opposition’s strategies against his party so as not to be caught unawares.
“It does not mean that we are sleeping, and snoring; we are sleeping with our two eyes opened,” Mimiko said.
The governor was reluctant to comment on the extent of preparedness of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the body saddled with the responsibility of conducting the said election.
He said, “I have a feeling that they are busy but it’s the timely deliverables; delivered according to timelines, that can make us to say, empirically, these people (INEC) are prepared for the election.”
